Single yellow lines mean “no waiting” during specific times, but those times aren’t always clear.
If you’ve received a PCN for parking on a single yellow, it is essential to check if the council followed the rules for notifying you of the restriction.
Grounds for Cancelling a Single Yellow Line Fine
- Missing Time Plate: Unlike double yellow lines, single yellow lines must have a nearby “time plate” sign explaining the hours of restriction. If there is no sign on that stretch of road or at the entrance to the controlled zone, the fine is invalid.
- The Loading Exemption: You are generally allowed to stop on a single yellow line to load or unload heavy or bulky goods (unless there are “no loading” kerb blips). If you were actively moving items, you can appeal with a delivery note or receipt.
- Picking Up Passengers: You are usually allowed to stop briefly on a single yellow line to pick up or drop off passengers, including those with disabilities.
- Faded Markings: If the yellow line is broken, faded, or covered by debris to the point it isn’t clearly visible, it does not meet the legal requirements of the TSRGD 2016.
